Once I started this book I couldn’t stop reading it. At times it was difficult to read. The fact that someone as young as Krystyna was when she went through all of these terrible events survived is a testament to her faith. Raised a Jew she was interested in her Catholic friends religion. She kept her knowledge secret. This and her mom’s statement that “God protects orphans”, helped carry her through this hardship. For those who want to read a clean cut memoir that takes them from point A to point B smoothly, you need to know that this doesn’t happen in this book. I believe that is why I enjoyed it. It reads like someone who is telling a story and remembers it in bits a pieces. The author has done an excellent job of putting things in chronological order. However, It is obvious that there are gaps in her memory. This makes it seem even more authentic. We remember things and then what we remember triggers another memory. However, we don’t want to interrupt our story so we throw that thought in and tell our audience we will discuss it in more detail later. So many people who have survived the Holocaust came out bitter. No life was not easy and was not fair to the author. However, she took the lessons learned and used them in a positive way to shape her life.We teach about the Holocaust in our eighth and ninth grade English Language Arts Classes. This is definitely a book I will put on my shelves at school. It is another voice added to so many. Yet this is told in a manner my students will definitely be able to understand. I highly recommend this book.

This is unlike any other memoir I have read before! A beyond heart-warming story of Krystyna Carmi a beautiful little girl who lost her family during the holocaust. Krystyna was the only child survivor from all the Jewish children of Oberty. She shares her courageous story of her life. Each page takes you on a journey as if you were there walking hand in hand with Krystyna. Seeing things through her eyes, smelling the scents she did. Feeling the pain and heartache that followed. The Struggle of what she went through to get where she is in life. Her journey was not an easy one at all!One thing that really makes this book even more captivating, is all the beautiful pictures! It really makes you not only connect to the Author but also to the other people in the book. By the time you reach the end of this beautiful book, you’ll want to re-read it all over again. The detail and writting style that Krystyna shares with her readers are amazing. It brings so much insight into what happened during World War II that we may not already know. This is definitely a MUST READ! But be warned, you’ll need some tissues!

It took me about 3 days to read the book. The first day I read primarily the part of Krystyna's life before the war. This part to me didn't grab my attention. There was nothing really interesting about it, however, I wanted to keep reading. Krystyna was writing about her life before the war, during the good times. She was describing her interactions with other children, and how she was treated in her own family. The second day I was reading about the war times, and I read as much as I could. I am glad I continued reading as this part is the most strident, vibrant part of the book. It is truly incredible what Krystyna survived through as a little girl. This part of the book was very emotional, and colorful, and made the events that transpired sound very realistic. I think Krystyna Carmi is successful at describing these events as she still remembers so much, and the colorful details of the descriptions throughout the book really make the story stand out and almost come to life. The third day of my reading was the part of the escape, and the long hiding in the woods, as well as all the events after the World War II was over.It is interesting for me to read the story because, really, Krystyna is almost the same age now as my aunt. I am very impressed with all the memories described in the book, all of the details, as well as the courage that Krystyna had to put it all down on paper.Overall, this is a great book mostly due to the events described and the memories that needed to be put on paper. This generation of war survivors is almost gone now, as in my family most of the elders are deceased and I wouldn't be able to hear their war stories any more. This is nice that Krystyna was able to share her experiences, and sadness with the world in this book.I was amazed with the number of photographs that were found and preserved from those times, and the photos really make the book that much more vivid and real.I studied history from the perspective of a Soviet child in the 80-90s, and it is always interesting for me to read what it was like from the point of view of a real person living in Poland during the war, and learn what it was like. There is never going to be a way to understand why this happened to so many people who suffered and were tortured during the Holocaust, or all of the other genocides done to all of other nations throughout time. These are disgraceful pages of history, and people will never be able to pay back for what was done. It is not possible to return the families lost, and to undo the tortures. It is important to read about it though, and to learn, and never let this happen again. I feel helpless reading about human racism. I hope that more people can read this book, and suffer through with Krystyna, and feel compassion to one another never to let genocides happen again.Sample was provided free of charge for reading and a review.

The author really details her childhood. This was nice. There is nothing worse about reading a memoir then to get the feeling that the author has only given the readers the bare bones of their story. Not that every, little detail needs to be provided. Yet, when I am reading a memoir I am wanting to feel like I got to know the author or the subject matter that the memoir is written on.In this book, I really did feel like I got an clear image of what life was like for Krystyna growing up. When she talked about her family, I felt like I wanted to be a part of her family. The pictures that are featured in this book are great. I like how the author placed them throughout the book; instead of all in the center of the book or at the end. Not that I really needed the images to tell the story as I got an instant image in my head reading the book. However, the images helped with the story. Due to the placement of them, they enhanced the story more. Not all great memories but you can't expect that when people are dying in the ghetto. You really appreciate life more when you read stories like Krystyna's. This book is easy reading. If you enjoy reading memoirs than you have to check this book out.
